The Park We Take For Granted

Bear Creek doesn't announce itself. It just keeps moving through the middle of the city, and Muskoseepi Park exists because someone had the sense not to build over it. The name comes from the Cree for Bear Creek, which is a better name than most parks earn.

The trails do the real work. Kilometres of them, stitched through trees and meadow and along the water, connecting neighbourhoods that would otherwise mean a drive. You can get from one side of town to the other without touching a road, which is worth more than people admit.

Summer turns it into the default meeting spot. Picnics, paddlers on the water, community events that spill onto the grass. The creek corridor pulls in enough birds and wildlife that you can lose the downtown feeling in about four minutes, which is the appeal.

Winter doesn't shut it down, it just changes the terms. The trails stay open under snow, skiers and walkers keep using them, and the cold has a way of making the whole park feel bigger and quieter than it is.

No season here is the wrong one. Wear boots that can handle mud or ice, depending on the month, and don't rush the trails. The park rewards the people who slow down for it.
