Zone 8 Athletics Finishes Third In Alberta

Grande Prairie sends a team to the Alberta Summer Games every two years, and every two years somebody writes the nice paragraph about heart and effort. This time the results wrote it instead. Zone 8's under-16 track and field athletes went to Strathcona County up against the deepest talent pool in the province and came home with fifteen medals, a truckload of top-eight finishes, and a team standing that nobody in the Peace Country's living memory can match. Every centimetre counted. Every athlete acted like it. Day one: the warning shot Six medals on the first day alone, plus enough top-eight finishes to keep the scoreboard busy. By the time the lights went down, Zone 8 had already matched its entire medal count from the 2023 Okotoks/Diamond Valley Games — in one afternoon. Jumps, hurdles, distance, throws. All of it paying out. Day two: no letting up The sun did not cooperate, but the athletes did. Four more medals — gold, silver, bronze, spread across events — landed on day two. By the close of it, the Zone 8 boys sat third in the province and the girls were fourth, half a point out of third. Nobody was talking about participation anymore. They were doing the math on a historic finish. Day three: relays, distance, and the chant The morning skies over Strathcona County had other plans, but the team closed out its Games campaign on a high anyway. You could have heard the chant from Peace River if the wind was right: Who's great? ZONE 8! The relay squads, boys and girls both, ran clean races with results to match. The 2000m events delivered again. The girls' medley relay rounded out the haul.

Where the standings actually landed Medals get the attention, but track and field runs on a team score too, and the math is unforgiving. Every top-eight finish earns points — 10 for first down to 1 for eighth — and the totals decide the standings. In track and field, Zone 8 — Peace Country Athletics placed third overall in Alberta: third in the boys' standings, third in the girls'. Nobody can point to that having happened before in Zone 8, and it may never have happened at all. Worth keeping the two numbers separate: third is the athletics standing specifically. Across all 18 sports at the Games, Zone 8 finished sixth of 8 zones on the overall medal table — so track and field carried the zone's flag well above where the Games as a whole placed it. That is the kind of gap between a sport and a zone that gets talked about in coaches' meetings for years. Who's great? ZONE 8! Medal counts are still being tallied. Zone 8's total stands at 27 (5 gold, 8 silver, 14 bronze) and may still rise as final results are confirmed. Zone 8 Athletics medallists All events here are U16 (15 and under) — the category the Games list as "15U". These 15 are the track and field medals only. Zone 8 won 27 in total across all 18 sports at the 2026 Games — 5 gold, 8 silver and 14 bronze. Athletics brought home more than half the zone's entire haul, and every one of its golds. Christopher Nelissen is the head Grande Prairie and region coach with the Peace Country Wolves Athletics Club, the Peace Country's competitive track and field and cross-country running club. He served as Zone 8 Representative for the 2026 Alberta Summer Games track team he writes about here.

He came to coaching as a competitor. A sprinter by background, he has raced everything from the 100m to the 1500m and tested himself well off the track too, in cross-country and trail races from 3km to 20km, before finding his own niche in middle distance.

He began coaching in 2018 and holds Trained status from Athletics Canada at the Sprints and Hurdles Club coach level. He is also meet director of the Peace Country Classic, Grande Prairie's annual all-comers track meet.

Under his direction the Zone 8 athletics team came home from the 2026 Games with 15 track and field medals and finished third in Alberta in track and field — third in the boys’ team standings and third in the girls’. That is the athletics result specifically, not the zone’s overall Games placing, and it is the strongest track and field finish Zone 8 has recorded in living memory.
