The Family Activity List Nobody Asked For
Somebody's toddler is going to melt down in the parking lot of the Eastlink Centre this weekend. It happens every weekend. This is not a criticism of the Eastlink Centre. It is a fact about toddlers and parking lots, and it should not stop you from going, because the pool there does the thing every good rec centre pool should do, which is make three hours disappear without anyone asking you for money more than once.
Muskoseepi Park gets called the crown jewel of the city so often that the phrase has gone soft, like a coin rubbed smooth. Fine. It's still true. What people forget to mention is that it's not one thing — it's a dozen small ones stitched together along Bear Creek, and the trick is picking your entrance point on purpose instead of wandering in and hoping. Go in near the Heritage Discovery Centre if you want the kids to look at a homestead cabin for ninety seconds and then ask to leave. Go in near the off-leash area if you have a dog and want the kids to disappear into the trees while you pretend to watch them. Go in winter if you want the toboggan hill, which is short, unglamorous, and exactly the right amount of dangerous for a six-year-old.
The zoo is not going to change your life. It is also, somehow, always the right call on a grey Tuesday in April when the kids have cabin fever and you have forty minutes to burn before nap time. Nobody leaves talking about the zoo. Everybody leaves having had, against their expectations, a fine time.
Skip Kleskun Hill if you're expecting a hike. It's a twenty-minute wander through badland formations east of the city that looks like someone dropped a piece of the Alberta badlands into the wrong postal code, and for that reason alone it's worth the drive once a year, ideally in the fall when the light does something the hoodoos deserve. Bring water. There is none out there.
Saskatoon Island, out past Wembley, is the better beach day than anything closer to town, and the fact that it requires forty minutes in a hot car with someone's shoe missing is the whole reason it stays good. Lakes that are easy to get to fill up. This one filters itself.
Crystal Lake, further north, is where you go when you've done all of the above twice and want to feel like you left the region without actually leaving the region. Bring the canoe. Don't bring expectations about cell service.
What gets left off these lists, always, is the thing that actually works, which is doing less. An hour at the splash park. A slow bike loop through the park with no destination. The library on a Wednesday, which nobody puts in an article because it doesn't photograph well, but which will save your Thursday when it's minus thirty and the kids have opinions about staying inside.
None of this is a secret. It's just easy to forget on a Tuesday that the good stuff was fifteen minutes away the whole time, doing nothing in particular, waiting for someone to show up.
