Two Small Lakes Worth the Long Drive South
No motorboats. That's the whole personality of the place, really, and it tells you more than any trail map. Drive the two-plus hours down Highway 40 past Grande Cache, turn off toward the park, and what you get is two small lakes connected by a short trail, both of them off-limits to anything with an engine bolted to the back. Canoes, kayaks, the odd kicked-out inflatable. That's it. If you've spent a summer afternoon at a bigger lake listening to wake boats carve laps, you'll understand why some people drive the extra distance just to not hear that.

What you get instead is stillness that isn't manufactured for you. Nobody built a boardwalk here to explain the ecosystem. There's a campground, a couple of boat launches sized for canoes, and trails that connect the lakes and loop around them, unhurried and mostly flat.

Bring a light rod. Nobody's launching a bass boat here and nobody should try. The appeal is casting from a canoe in water quiet enough that you can hear your own line hit it.
Camping is basic, which is either a selling point or a deal-breaker depending on what kind of trip you're after. This isn't a place with a camp store or a splash pad for the kids to burn off energy between naps. It's tent pads, fire pits, a pit toilet situation you make peace with, and enough tree cover that afternoon heat doesn't wreck the day. If your idea of camping requires a plug for the trailer and cell service to check the
